Marshalltown Margin Trowel — Forged High Carbon Steel

A margin trowel is the tool you reach for when nothing else fits. Slim flat-nosed blade that gets mortar and tile adhesive into corners, along edges and behind fixtures where a full-size trowel just can't go. It's also the tool most masons and tile setters end up using twenty times a day for things it was never sold for: scooping mud, cleaning a notched trowel, backbuttering tile, prying, scraping, mixing small batches of thinset in a bucket.

Build & Materials

Blade and tang are forged from a single piece of high carbon steel — not welded, not riveted. That's the detail that matters. A welded tang is where a margin trowel fails, usually right when you're prying on something you shouldn't be. Forged one-piece means the tool flexes and comes back instead of snapping at the joint. The steel is tempered, ground and polished for balance and flex. Made in the USA with global materials.

Handles come two ways. DuraSoft® is Marshalltown's soft-grip material with an integral finger guard, so your knuckles stay off the mud and the tool doesn't twist in a wet glove. Hardwood with a metal ferrule is the traditional build — drier in hand, and it's what a lot of old-school masons still prefer.

Choosing Your Size

The 5 in. is the everyday margin trowel — the one that lives in the bag and handles tight corners, small patches and grout repair. The 8 in. moves more material per pass and reaches deeper, which earns its keep on larger tile formats, stucco patching and anywhere you're spreading rather than just placing.

Where You'll Use It

Tile and stone setting, brick and block work, stucco patching, grout repair, small concrete touch-ups, setting anchor bolts. Anywhere a job gets tight — inside corners, around drains, up against a jamb.
