Marshalltown Beveled End Magnesium Hand Float — DuraSoft® Handle

This magnesium hand float opens up the concrete surface and brings the cream up before you trowel. Skip the float or use a worn one and you'll fight the finish the rest of the pour. The beveled ends are what set this one apart: they keep the leading edge from digging in when you push, so the tool floats instead of gouging.

Build & Materials

Cast magnesium blade — light enough to work overhead of a wet slab all day, and it won't drag on air-entrained concrete the way an aluminum blade does. Magnesium also gives you more knuckle clearance than a wood float, which matters when you're working tight against a form. The DuraSoft® handle is Marshalltown's soft-grip material: it takes the shock out of a long pour and doesn't turn slick when your gloves get wet. Made in the USA with global materials.

Choosing Your Length

The 16 in. is the control float — easier to steer in tight spots, around obstructions and on smaller residential pours, and lighter in the hand when you're reaching. The 20 in. covers more ground per stroke and leaves a flatter surface on open slabs, at the cost of some maneuverability. Most finishers who pour both residential and commercial end up carrying one of each.

Float right after screeding, while the concrete is still plastic. Work it flat, don't press — you're leveling ridges and bringing paste to the surface, not compacting. Once the bleed water is gone and the slab takes its initial set, you move to the trowel.
